Important for the fandom community!

Our fannish lifeblood wants your help! Over the years we've all banded together to donate money, time, and/or talents to various charities - don't you think we should devote some of that energy to this amazing organisation who's maintaining and developing so many sustainable fandom projects for us? I for one, can't remember what fandom was like before AO3. I love that place, and I really hope we can do something to keep it going. 

They've got some great incentives for you if you do donate, such as sending you promotional stuff like stickers, shirts, etc. (dependent on the amount donated) and I believe it is also tax deductible if you are from the US, and if your country supports the applicable law stated on their donation page.

So if that's not enough to convince you, can I provide you more incentive by saying: donate and I will make you podfic?


So how is this gonna work? Basically...

Donate $10, get 3,000 words - with a cap of 15,000 words.

Fandoms I'm willing to podfic:

Any (including NC-17 and RPS), but if I don't know the source material, it will probably sound strange. Preferable fandoms include Sherlock, Merlin, The Social Network, XMFC, anime and manga, etc.

Notes:

• If the author has not given blanket permission, you will need to ask and show proof of their consent to have their story podficced.
• In the unlikely event that this would happen, I am only human and cannot reward you with a podfic over 15K even if you were to generously donate more than $50.
• I am rarely squicked, but I reserve the right to have you choose another story if it's more than I can handle.
• Word count limits will be upheld within reason.
• My strength lies in comedy/crack, my weakness would probably have to be porn and drama.

So here's what you have to do:

1. decide on a story that meets or is under the word limit.
2. grab permission if the author is not one who has granted blanket permission.
3. Comment here or PM me with the proof of permission, as well as the proof of donation.
4. If the story isn't more than I can handle, wait until I get off my arse to deliver the goods.

Yaaaay! That's my aim - convincing people to donate now rather than later! It concerns me that they're really campaigning hard about this, and since I love AO3 with all of my still beating heart, hell yeah I want to help out! I hope some kind moderator-type fan has plans to run a help-haiti type comm for the OTW soon...

So yeah, same rules as last time's podfic auction! Go!

Same here: I was going to donate anyway because AO3 = AWESOME. But then you said...... I know I know, I still haven't sent you the rest but this is just a too fantastic offer to pass!

I can't remember what fandom was like to me before AO3. It certainly and entirely has changed my way of fandom/fannish life.

AO3 is a revelation. I'm so glad that it exists!

Is no one taking you up on this offer? Can I attempt to spread the word? I did mention it last week, but apparently no one noticed. I have no idea why I talk about anything on LJ/DW since people don't seem to care about my recs, but I have to have somewhere I can squee about stuff:)

Spread all you like! Advertising stuff is a hard business, but hey, the internet does what it wants. Don't get so disheartened - not everyone appreciates podfic like you do :)

It totally mystifies me, people not liking podfic. I mean, if you don't like fanfic, I can understand that, and there are people who don't like audio stuff, and I can understand that, but the rest of the teeming masses ought to enjoy podfic as far as I'm concerned:)

There's all sorts of arguments as to why, I think, mostly ranging from disinterest/apathy; not really understanding how a person reading the story would add to your enjoyment of the fic; getting freaked out at how aware you are that there are actually real people behind fanworks and therefore getting this really uncomfortable sensation akin to watching a movie with a sex scene with your parents, etc. etc.

For us though, at the end of the day the most important thing is that there are people who like podfics ♥

Someone told me they thought it would be weird to have a woman's voice reading the stories. That seems strange to me as I "hear" things with my voice anyway, so what difference should that make? *shrug* Everyone is different and the important point for me, at the end of the day, is that there are people out there making brilliant podfics:) ♥

hmm, that is pretty odd... but I guess I have to take into account the fact that as someone who listens to a lot of podfic, I don't have those kinds of hang-ups. Plus I'm someone who learns better by listening.

Honestly though, I would love it if we did have more male readers, but the (mostly female) readers we do have are amazing, talented people.

(Are we talking about fleurrochard? I've gotten a slew of comments from her recently!)

I learn best by talking:) But I don't mind listening to women read. I like it. Especially when the reader has a soothing voice.

Are there male podficcers? Do you know any?

Yes! Fleurrochard. I saw her mention you in a welovepodfic entry I think.

I don't know any personally, but there are two or three guys who have, but I'm unsure as to how prolific they are (and I actually haven't listened to any myself, because they haven't popped up in my fandoms!

Fleur's been super nice to me thanks to the feedback challenge, it's really lovely to hear from her!
